S.K.Pottekkatt

S.K.Pottekkatt was a highly admired Malayalam writer who was recipient of 'Jnanapith' the highest literary award in India for his Malayalam novel 'Oru Desathinte Kadha' in the year 1980.
He was the author of about 60 books out of which ten are novels,18 travelogues,24 short story collections,four plays,three poetry books,and memoirs,essays etc.
S.K.Pottekkatt (Sankaramkutty Pottekakatt) was born on 4th March 1913 at Kozhikode in Kerala.He graduated from Zamorin's College,Calicut in 1934.During the period 1937 to 1939 he worked as a teacher at Calicut Gujarati school.He went to Bombay in 1939 and returned in 1045.During his stay at Bombay he was involved in Indian freedom struggle.He worked in many organisations during that period.He wrote the  novel 'Nadan Premam' also at that time in 1941.
He got married in 1952.
His novel 'Visha Kanyaka' is based about the migration of people to Northern Malabar regions in those period.
His novel 'Oru Theruvinte Kadha' is based on the 'Mithai Theruvu' which is S.M.Steet of Kozhikkode.
'Oru Desathinte Kadha' also referred as his biographical novel won Kerala Sahithya Academy award in 1972,Kendra Sahitya Academy award in 1977 and 'Jnanpith' award, the highest literary award in 1980.
He embarked 18 months tour to Africa and Europe in 1946.In 1952 he travelled to Ceylon,Indonesia and Malaysia.Later he visited Finland,Czechoslovakia and Russia.
His travelogues received much admiration and acclaim.His detailed descriptions give a proper insight of that places and provides an inner vision as if really seeing those places.His narration of novels with sudden twists and changes of situations, suspense etc delights the readers,and also the readers are very much fond of his travelogues which use charming beautiful language,unparalleled skill of describing the places etc that still they are all widely read.
Some of his popular travelogues are 'Simhabhoomi,Kappirikalude Nattil,Nile Diary,Indonesian Diary,Balidweep,Pathirasooryante Nattil,Innathe Europe,Soviet Diary' etc.





He was given a honorary Doctorate Degree(Degree of Letters) by the Univerisity of Calicut in 1982.
S.K.Pottekkatt was elected Member of Indian Parliament for a term from 1962 to 1967.
His books has been translated to English,German,Italian,Russian,Czech and all major Indian languages.
S.K.Pottekatt passed away on 6th August 1982.

I.M.Vijayan

I.M.Vijayan is a former Indian Footballer who earned accolades as a brilliant player and a top scorer.
I.M.Vijayan (Inivalappil Mani Vijayan) was born on 25th April 1969 at Thrissur in Kerala and his childhood days were in a gravely poor condition.He had the passion for football from the childhood days and loved to watch matches held at Thrissur Municipal Stadium and used to sell soda to the spectators.He started to play football in local clubs and earned appreciation as a skilled player very soon.
He was spotted by the then DGP of Kerala  M.K.Joseph and selected him to Kerala Police Football Club





 at an young age.He continued to play for Kerala Police for four years up to 1991.He delivered brilliant performance in the Quilon Nationals 1987.He could impress the masses by his unique style of playing.His playing position used to be as a striker.
He joined Mohan Bagan, Calcutta and played for one year and came back to Kerala Police in 1992.Next year went back to Mohan Bagan and in 1994 joined JCT Mills Phagwara and stayed with them for three years.
He then joined FC Kochin, went back to Mohan Bagan and came back again to FC Kochin in 1999.
He left FC Kochin in 2001 and joined East Bengal Club, left in 2002 and joined JCT mills.He left after 2 year contract and joined Churchill Brothers S.C.He left the club after one year and moved to East Bengal club in 2005 and left East Bengal Club in 2006.
I.M.Vijayan had his debut International tournament in the year 1989 and played in a number of International tournaments such as Nehru Cup,Pre-Olympics,Pre-World Cup,SAAF Cup and SAF Games,He was part of the victorious Indian team in the 1999 South Asian Football Federation Cup.He retired from Int'l football aftr th Afro-Asian Games of 2003.He was the top scorer in the tournament with 4 goals.
Vijayan and Baichung Bhutia comprised one of the deadliest forward lines and used to help the team score vital goals.
I.M.Vijayan has been honored as the Best Footballer of the year in 1993,1997 and in 1999.He is recipient of Arjuna Award also.
He is appreciated for the achievement of the fastest ever Int'l goal in 1999 SAF games and as the  Top scorer in the 2003 Afro Asian Games.
He has opened a Football School in Thrissur to train young talents.
He also has  started a sports equipment company in Thrissur.
I.M.Vijayan acted  in the main role of a Malayalam  Film 'Shantham' in the year 2001       which was directed by Jayaraj.The film won National award as the Best film of that year.He acted along with Seema Biswas,M.G.Shashi,Kalamandalam Gopi,K.P.A.C.Lalitha,Madampu Kunjikuttan etc in that film.
He acted in another Malayalam film 'Aakasathile Paravakal' along with Kalabhavan Mani.He has also acted in Tamil films like 'Thimiru' 'Komban' etc. 
He is married to Raji and they have three children.

Leela Omchery

Leela Omchery is a well famed Classical singer,Musicologist and writer.She is the wife of 'Omcherry N.N.Pillai' who is a renowned Malayalam novelist,poet and playwright.She is younger sister of Late Kamukara Purushothaman, who was a famous playback singer in Malayalam and Tamil as well as a Classical singer.
Leela Omchery was born as the daughter of parents Shri.N.P.Kurup and Smt.Laksmikutty Amma at Thiruvattar in 1928 (Now in Tamil Nadu).Her father was a High School Headmaster and was also an actor,composer and dramatist.Mother was also music exponent.
Leela Omchery was  trained in Classical music from childhood along with her elder brother K.Purushothaman.She learnt classical Carnatic music from her parents and grandmother initially and then from Gurus like 'Kambar brothers,Arumukham Pillai,Vadakkamcherry Rama Bhagavathar etc.
Exponents like T.K.Subrahmanya Iyer taught her Sopana Sangeetham.
Hindustani Music was taught to her by Gurus like Pt.Prannath.
She had her schooling in Kanyakumari District and for Intermediate course she studied at Women's College Thiruvanathapuram.
She passed in flying colors courses like 'B.A. Music from Kerala University,
B.A.Hindistani from Punjab University,
M.A.English from Meerut University and
Ph.D from Delhi University.
She has given so much contributions in the field of Indian music.
She unearthed a number of forgotten composiotions of legends like Swathi Thirunal,Irayimman Thampi,Govinda Marar etc.
She brought out many traditional dance songs including Mohiniyattam songs through Audio Cassettes,CD s,DVDs etc.
She is working as the Professor and Principal at 'Trikaala Gurukulam' in Delhi where training in dance,Classical music,Sopana Sangeetham etc are given to aspirant students.
She is also Professor at Kamukara School of Dance,Music and Research Studies at Thiruvananthapuram.
She is President of the Organisation 'Dakshina Bharati, and Vice president of 'Swaralaya'.
She is also accredited  Supervisor and Guide to Ph.D and M.Phil from various universities.
She is selection Board member of AIR,'Door- Darshan'
 etc.
She wrote books like 'Indian Music, 'Immortals of Indian Music' etc in English and  books like
'Abhinaya Sangeetham

She has two Children and her daughter Deepti Omchery Bhalla is  Professor at Faculty of Music and Fine Arts,University of Delhi and is an acclaimed classical dancer.
